Write an email, jump on a conference call, post on social media, engage with friends and family, schedule meetings, go to a networking event - repeat 50x daily, for the rest of your career… or until you burn out.
As real estate agents, the seminars, courses, and networking events we go to all consist of the same message regarding suggestions on how we should spend our time in order to become top producers in the industry. This message is meant to be empowering, motivating, and to fuel the fire that ignites our career in the wonderful world of real estate. It certainly does help to hear other top producers’ stories and experiences, but what happens when you find yourself in the daily grind and all of sudden you feel like you’re stuck in a hamster wheel?
Engaging, planning, scheduling, interacting, and trying to figure out how to do MORE - how to get more time, how to get more clients, how to make more money, how to reach more people, how to have more fun, so on and so forth. This is the world we are living in. You either find a way to balance the chaos - or you find that living in a stressed state is your new normal. It seems that most of us are functioning under the latter.
Real Estate is widely known to be one of the higher stress occupations, yet we don’t talk about how to manage that stress during the process of building and maintaining a career as a real estate agent. I’m not an expert in the wellness industry, however, I am determined to bring awareness to the importance of physical, emotional, and mental well-being while building a real estate business. I have spent 6 and a half years in this industry and have watched newbie agents struggle to find work/life balance only to either give up entirely or work 24/7 - headed straight for a burn out. Either way, they are dubbed as not fit to be a real estate agent. I have seen top producers almost leave the industry after working night and day to build the thriving business all the newbie agents want. And I, myself, have hit a burn out phase that made me question what it is about the industry that I truly love.
Upon this burn out, an epiphany arose. I realized that aside from loving architecture, being involved in my community, and being an entrepreneur, I really love helping people find or build their best lives. Whether that has been by way of helping a young couple find a home to start their family in or consult with a new agent about how to build and manage their new career as a real estate agent. The essence of what I love in this industry is helping people.
On November 30th, I am hosting a summit for women in the real estate industry - don’t worry guys, your turn will come. This event will highlight ways to renew, rebuild, and restore your work/life balance so that you can live a less stressful life, and in turn, continue building a business and career that keeps you fulfilled. Beyond the Sale was created by Brittany Wrenn. This started as a blog almost two years ago as a way for Brittany to continue to offer additional education, support, and guidance to any and all that have an interest in real estate and building a lifestyle they'll love. Reaching a wider audience should seem simple in this age of technology that we're in, however, there are many factors that play in to how we communicate, interact, and ultimately work with everyone that we do. From looking up reviews to watching tutorials, everyone has their way of digging for information and connecting with the people providing a service or information. When I joined the real estate industry, I joined for more than just helping people buy, sell, and rent. I joined for the opportunity to help build, strengthen, and support communities. I joined to encourage people to invest in their lives and their futures. I joined to help people find a piece of this world we live in where they can feel comfort, gather with loved ones and build memories. I joined because I believe in protecting the greater good of humanity and the cities we call home.
For these reasons, I took last year to research different companies and organizations that I could align myself with in order to expand my efforts. Upon doing so, I came across and partnered with Giveback Homes. This company is a community of real estate professionals that help build homes for deserving families around the globe and help provide clean water to communities in need.
Since partnering with Giveback Homes, I have made the commitment to donate a portion of my commissions to our Chicago Build Project. However, being a member of this community enables me to contribute to many cities all over the world. Whether that means donating or traveling to another build day or banning together with other Giveback members to raise money for a city in crisis - we are agents for social good. Home buying seminars are often held by real estate agents in order to help the general public understand more about the home buying process. It can be a fun way to get together with other industry professionals to mingle and answer questions potential home buyers may have. So we decided to kick-off 2017 with our very own #Homegoals Home Buying Q & A. We had a great turnout of first time home buyers looking to learn more and we couldn't have been happier to share our knowledge.
Our team consisted of a Mortgage Lender, Al Dynia, Attorney with Czaja & Dynia, LLC, Phil Anello, Home Inspector with PK Quality Home Inspections, and myself - Brittany Wrenn, Realtor with Coldwell Banker. Each person on our panel represents a key role in a real estate transaction. We wanted each professional to explain their part so that the first time home buyer is familiar with who they'll be working with during each part of the home buying process. Top 10 Takeaways:
1. Find a Mortgage Lender and get pre-approved
2. To help determine whether you qualify for a mortgage and what the rate will be, your lender will evaluate your credit report and your debt-to-income ratio
3. The minimum credit score is 580, but you will need to put 10% down for an FHA loan
4. It doesn't cost you any money to have a Realtor help you find a home
5. Your Realtor will help you with suggested offer price and negotiations based on fair market value
6. Negotiating closing costs will be left up to you and your Realtor on how you want to offer on the property - mentally plan for 2-3% of the purchase price.
7. The time frame from contract to closing is typically anywhere between 30-45 days
8. You will work with a Lender, Realtor, Attorney, and Home Inspector during the transaction
9. Do NOT make any large purchases while you're trying to buy a home (i.e. car, furniture, etc)
10. Trust your team!
